What Is MATIC?
MATIC is the native cryptocurrency of the Polygon network. Polygon is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum that provides faster and cheaper transactions. The MATIC token is used to pay gas fees on the Polygon PoS chain and for staking to secure the network.
Polygon (formerly Matic Network) was launched in 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic. The network went live in 2020 and has attracted major DeFi applications including Uniswap, Aave, and Curve Finance.
MATIC Price History
MATIC reached its all-time high of $2.92 in December 2021 during the DeFi bull run. The token has seen significant price appreciation from its launch price of $0.003. In 2026, MATIC is trading in the $0.08–$0.22 range as the project transitions to the POL token standard.
MATIC Token Migration to POL
Polygon is currently transitioning from the MATIC token to the new POL token. The conversion rate is 1:1 — every MATIC token can be exchanged for one POL token. POL will serve as the gas token for the entire Polygon ecosystem, including the AggLayer and all connected chains.
