Polygon Layer 2

Polygon is one of the most widely adopted Layer 2 scaling solutions for Ethereum. It provides faster transaction speeds and lower costs by processing transactions off the Ethereum mainchain while maintaining Ethereum's security guarantees.

What Is a Layer 2?

A Layer 2 (L2) is a secondary network built on top of an existing blockchain (Layer 1) like Ethereum. Layer 2 solutions process transactions faster and cheaper than the main chain, then periodically settle the results back on Ethereum for final security.

Polygon's Layer 2 Products

Polygon PoS (Proof of Stake)

The original Polygon chain. A sidechain secured by its own validator set using a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. Polygon PoS can handle up to 65,536 transactions per block with sub-2-second confirmation times. Gas fees on Polygon PoS are typically under $0.01 per transaction.

Polygon zkEVM

A zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine that is fully EVM-equivalent. Polygon zkEVM uses ZK-proofs to verify transaction batches on Ethereum, providing stronger security guarantees than Polygon PoS while maintaining compatibility with all Ethereum smart contracts.

Polygon AggLayer

The AggLayer is Polygon's vision for a unified multi-chain system. It allows different blockchains (both Layer 1s and Layer 2s) to interoperate seamlessly while sharing security through ZK-proof aggregation. The AggLayer is designed to make the multi-chain experience feel like a single chain for users.

Polygon vs Other Layer 2s

  • Polygon PoS vs Arbitrum/Optimism: Polygon PoS is technically a sidechain (doesn't inherit Ethereum's security), while Arbitrum and Optimism are true L2s with fraud proofs
  • Polygon zkEVM vs zkSync/StarkNet: All use ZK-proofs but have different trade-offs in EVM compatibility and proving speed
  • Polygon's advantage: Massive existing ecosystem with millions of users, established brand recognition, and enterprise partnerships

Polygon's Enterprise Adoption

Polygon has attracted significant enterprise adoption, with brands like Disney, Adidas, Prada, DraftKings, Robinhood, and Instagram building on the network. This real-world usage is a key differentiator from many competing Layer 2 solutions.

How to Use Polygon

To use the Polygon network, you need to bridge ETH or MATIC from Ethereum mainnet to Polygon using the official Polygon Bridge. Popular wallets like MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Rainbow support Polygon natively. Simply add the Polygon network (Chain ID: 137) and you can start using DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and dApps on Polygon with minimal fees.
